Wendy Smith

You don’t have to wear white to live happily ever after.

Wendy used the same wedding planner I used, the inimitable, Gina Whittington of WHITT ROSS, for her ‘Ever After’ Party, a non-wedding wedding reception. They weren’t planning a run-of-the-mill celebration, and thus her wardrobe had to be looked at through that same lens.

Wendy is a whip-smart creative person, excelling in graphic design, advertising, and branding. Super similar in our career interests and approach to personal style, we got on immediately and I was thrilled to work with such an unconventional bride. She wanted to wear color, something sculptural and modern, and drama was encouraged. I instantly pushed us toward Christopher John Rogers, as she had unknowingly described his exact design aesthetic. Look 24 from Collection 012, the black and white polka dot dress with the impossibly large bubble skirt, was our inspiration. We were hooked on the voluminous silhouette.

I found this Huishan Zhang dress the morning of driving down to Austin to meet Wendy. It was a complete coincidence. I saw it hanging in Forty-Five Ten and knew immediately it was the dress. The case was closed the second she tried it on. You know you’ve got something good when the client can’t stop twirling in the mirror, admiring the dress from all angles, shoulders pulled back taught. It was the only dress she tried on. We completed the look with interesting geometric earrings and bracelets by Nak Armstrong and black strappy heels by Khaite. The best accessory for a strapless dress is a clean neck.

Cheers to The Claytons!
